Evans arrested, then cut

DT Fred Evans was arrested last Sunday on multiple charges, including battery on a police officer. Yesterday, he was no longer part of the Miami Dolphins. The team released the second year player and former seventh-round pick. Coach Cameron had said that Sunday's arrest "would be taken seriously". Now we know he means it, and hopefully the rest of the team will learn from Cameron's actions.

Culpepper fine after crash, wants out of Miami

Daunte Culpepper was involved in an auto accident last week when his car was struck from behind. Culpepper sustained a minor injury to his left hand.

The injury shouldn't affect Culpepper's practice time because the Dolphins have barred him from practicing with the team while trying to make a trade deal for the former starting QB. Culpepper, however, wants to be released outright so that his new team wouldn't take on the burden of his contract, which he refuses to restructure. The two parties are scheduled to present their cases in front of an arbitrator on June 29.

Dolphins finally get Trent Green

After months of speculation, the Dolphins finally agreed to a trade with the Chiefs for Trent Green. The Dolphins will offer a conditional fifth round draft pick for the 36-year-old quarterback, which could become a fourth rounder if certain conditions are met.

Ironically, the deal comes on the same day that Daunte Culpepper received medical clearance to practice. Word is that the team is looking to trade Culpepper after acquiring Green.

I've gone on record as saying that I don't think getting Trent Green is a good move for the team, unless Culpepper's injury is actually worse off than we are led to believe. I would take Culpepper coming off injury over an aging Green any day. In the best case scenario, Green will start for the Dolphins for a year or two until John Beck takes over. In the worst case, Green doesn't last a year, Beck is a dud, and Culpepper regains his All-Pro form for another team.

QB updates

A couple of pieces of QB-related news this week:

  • Cleo Lemon signed a one-year deal for $1.3 million, and the Dolphins reportedly wanted to sign him to a longer term contract. It looks like the organization believes Lemon is a keeper, if not a starter.
  • The Dolphins slightly upgraded their offer to the Chiefs for Trent Green, proposing a conditional sixth-round draft pick that could become a fifth-rounder if certain conditions are met. The Chiefs asked for a fourth-rounder. I think the offer is fair, and I wouldn't want them to up the ante any more than that for an aging quarterback.
