Who will the Dolphins draft?

The NFL draft is a month away, and the Miami Dolphins have the top overall pick. Who will they take? Most mock drafts I've seen so far predict that the Dolphins will select Chris Long, the DE from Virginia and son of Howie Long. Some predict the team will pick another Long, OT Jake Long from Michigan.

Personally, I think they should do everything they can to trade down for more picks. This year's draft is not top-heavy, and when a team has a season as miserable as the Dolphins' 2007, there are a lot of holes to fill. The best recent blueprint for re-building a bad team through the draft, in my opinion, was Jimmy Johnson's Dallas Cowboys. By having a lot of draft picks and choosing players wisely in the draft (i.e., not Ted Ginn with the #9 pick), the Cowboys went from 1-15 in 1989 to Super Bowl champs after the 1992 season.

More free agent moves

The Dolphins acquired some more players in the past week, though no big names. Special teams players Keith Davis and Nathan Jones jumped from Dallas. Miami also signed kicker Dave Raynor. Davis has a chance to start in the secondary as well as play on special teams.

The team did lose one player, backup linebacker Derrick Pope, to the Minnesota Vikings.

Dolphins sign free agents

On the first day of free agency, the Dolphins signed seven free agents, more than any other team. The free agents were LBs Charlie Anderson and Reggie Torbor, DT Randy Starks, WR Ernest Wilford, QB Josh McNown, TE Sean Ryan, and OG Justin Smiley. Another LB, Calvin Pace, visited the team but did not sign yet.
