Dolphins sign FB Beasley

The Dolphins signed former Pro Bowl fullback Fred Beasley to a one-year contract. Beasley, who had played his entire career with the San Francisco 49ers, will likely be the team's starter.

Dolphins add CB Allen

The Dolphins added to their secondary by signing free agent CB Will Allen from the NY Giants for $12 million over 4 years. Ironically, the Giants had anticipated losing Allen and signed Sam Madison after he was released by the Dolphins, so the teams effectively traded cornerbacks.

Frerotte gone

Shortly after the Dolphins signed Daunte Culpepper, the team released Gus Frerotte, who then subsequently signed with the St. Louis Rams. The Dolphins preferred to keep Frerotte as a backup, for significantly less than what he was paid last season, but things didn't work out.

In other news, the Dolphins signed free agent CB/S Reynaldo Hill.

Dolphins acquire Culpepper

The Dolphins traded their second round pick in the upcoming draft to Minnesota for QB Daunte Culpepper. Culpepper's season was cut short after suffering a knee injury in October.

The Dolphins also pursued QB Drew Brees, but his salary demands were too high. Brees signed instead with the Saints for $60 million.

If he can play close to his old Pro Bowl caliber, then Culpepper will be more than worth the draft pick the Dolphins spent on him. As long as his knee is OK, the Dolphins will have upgraded at quarterback, and they can focus on other needs in the draft.

Seau released

In a widely expected move, the Dolphins cut LB Junior Seau, freeing up $2.9 million of cap space. In other news, DT Sam Adams and QB Drew Brees are expected to visit the Dolphins later this week.

Thoughts from the NFL combine

The NFL combine took place in Indianapolis last week. You can follow this link for some comments on the combine from ESPN.

A couple of thoughts when I read the article:
1) It's looking like the Dolphins will need to trade up if they want to get Jay Cutler.
2) Joseph Addai is in intriguing possibility at running back, especially if Ricky Williams is done for after his drug suspension. Addai played at LSU, so coach Saban should be familiar with him.

Dolphins release Madison, three others

According to ESPN, the Dolphins released Sam Madison, Reggie Howard, Tebucky Jones, and Damion McIntosh. The move saves the team $14.4 million in cap space. Madison had been open to restructuring his contract in order to stay with the team, but the two sides could not agree to a deal.
